koo koo for coldplay

when i was a young boy i tried to listen - coldplay

okay, so the coldplay show, last week. it was incredible. first, the forum is a pretty good place to see a concert. it's where the lakers / kings used to play. the forum used to be the shit. of course, now there's the staples center which is ginormous, state of the art, shiny and bright and new(ish). the staples center is also kind of a nightmare. getting off the subject. apologies.

fiona apple opened and she was great. matty and i both agreed that with the janis joplin biopics in the works (are they still?) that she shoulda been at the top of the list. ms. apple's got the balls required to play the role, as well as the voice. but, renee zellweger (sp?), c'mon. i like her, but she doesn't have balls. actually, in cold mountain, she did.

oh my god, i'm so rambleicious, this morning.

so, coldplay came on and just rocked the motherfucking house. when the played "yellow" as the third song, i knew they weren't fucking about. a cool effect was about halfway through the song, the lights went pretty light so you could see the whole venue pretty well and these giant, round yellow balloons came drifting down from the ceiling. the crowd did what you're supposed to do and batted them around and when they popped which they all did before the song was over (how did they manage that?) golden glitter was inside so it came fluttering down when the balloons popped. very cool and pretty.

chris martin is not just the spazzy dancing english guy. he's got this frenetic energy which is infectious. he's humping the piano, he's running around the venue, he's hopping around on one foot while crooning his beautiful falsettos. of course, the rest of the band is fantastic as well.

another great thing about chris martin is that he's a funny guy. his stage banter is funny and location specific. a few songs in, he apologized to the crowd because in a "headshot type city like los angeles", he and the band looked very unworthy of the crowd. since they've been on the road for awhile they just hadn't payed attention to their hair and the like. pretty witty. kinda like i love you, you vapid wankers.

i love you chris martin, you bitch.

let me just put this out there too, i think he's gorgeous.

the stage was pretty simple, but there was a huge screen behind the band and it alternated between images of the band, sometimes superimposed on top of each other which was cool. and it also showed like stars in space which would sometimes look like they were shooting out towards the crowd. i dunno, just cool images.

i've been lucky enough to see them twice and there's this sense of....community? i know how cheesy that sounds, and i'm not sure if that's the right word. you just feel good, and you know that everyone else does too. it's romantic and good.

i don't know.

finally, celebrities. i saw adam levine (yummy, yummy. the things i'd do to that man) and another member of maroon 5, one of the two shaggy blondes. that was good, but the celeb highlight of my night was adam brody and rachel bilson. SETH AND SUMMER! yeehaw!! they were with a bunch of young pretty people. that's almost the ultimate OC sighting. my personal ultimate would be a ben mackenzie / adam brody together (prefferably naked and engaged in a sexual situation) sighting.

but, that's just me.

all in all, it was a fabulous night.

also, on the way to the forum, we were listening to indie 103. and they had gwyneth (sp?) paltrow on as a guest dj. she played the arcade fire, the arctic monkeys, and some other pretty cool bands. i love the shows on "indie" cuz they're like the old cool shows where there was a lot of talking and cool guests. the way kroq used to be.

anyway, i'm rambling.

-take it / leave it-
