so, you want more coachella, huh? take that!!

pete yorn was great. he was scruffy, sexy, guitar playing goodness on a stick. i love when people live up to, or surpass their sound on c.d. pete passed that test. everybody was handed a schedule upon entering, but, as is often the case with these day long, multi stage affairs, the schedule is more of a suggestion than anything. after mr. yorn, we moved over to the second stage, and caught some of the charlatans u.k. they were quite good as well. i couldn't tell you the names of any of their songs, but they were good. then, it was back to the main stage to see jack johnson. i have no idea how well known jack johnson is, but he is an amazing singer. armed with only a acoustic guitar, he played a mellow, laid back set. when he brought out g. love, who was on the bill, but i didn't get to see, it was great. they played the rodeo clown song, and standing in the warm california sun, with palm trees surrounding us, it just felt...right. it seems that everyone played for at least an hour. after the g. love duet, jack played a little sublime, and a little bob marley. also great in the cali sunshine. then we went to the bathroom, then we saw a little queens of the stone age. i still don't know how i feel about these quasi metal, stoner rock bands. queens, fu manchu, et. al. so, i can say i didn't not like them, but i wouldn't call myself a fan. i was really interested in seeing them coz dave grohl was drumming for them, and he hasn't drummed exclusively for anyone since nirvana. something i consider to be a big fucking deal. not to mention my crush on mr. grohl. all i know is dave grohl beat those fucking skins, big time. i went to the dj tent and that was fun. it was huge, and the lazers were working, and they had two dj booths set up across from each other, so when one was ending his set, the other could just pick up from where the other left off. now, one band i regret not seeing is, the vines. there was a little buzz about them, and unfortunately, i didn't get to buzz in. that's one of the things i hate about festival shows, it's all about getting there early, and once you do that, you still have to make choices. also, going to shows like this with other people is hard, because nobody is as much of a freak about promptness as i am. steve has always been horrible about getting places early. he's one of those people that thinks the time when the opening acts are playing, is better spent at dinner, or tower records, and not at the venue. i, however, do not feel that way at all. so, i'm not gonna waste my time coulda-shoulda-woulda-ing, but...i could. anyhow, matt and i danced, and it was so much fun. there were lots of hot, shirtless guys dancing around pouring bottled water over themselves. i think if you are gay, or just a club goer, that you would appreciate the scene more. i don't club like i used to, but, i can still take my shirt off, and groove with the best of them, believethat. siouxsie was good, the sad thing is this, in jr. high i used to get so much shit for wearing my siouxsie and the banshees shirt to school, and i fucking loved her/them sooo much, and that night, as they played, i could nary remember a verse, and i was at a loss to name the songs. so sad. i know they played cities in dust first, and that i wanted to hear spellbound, christine, israel, happy house, and she didn't sing any of them. i think seeing siouxsie would have meant a hell of a lot more to me in jr. high, but the nostalgia was pretty cool. i did see her once, my freshman year, maybe, but i was way fucked up. so, i don't know. after siouxsie, i went back to the dj tent, for like half an hour, and then i met the gang at the second stage to see the beta band. now they were fucking great. their dj was the nuts. and they played the one song from high fidelity towards the end of their set. "i will now sell 5 copies of the new beta band cd", or whatever cusask says, you know, THAT song. anyway, they were great. jurrasic 5 was on the same stage after beta band, so we just hung out there, and waited. now, i'm not big on hip hop, but "j 5" fuckin' killed it. they all took turns freestyling at the end of their set, and oh my god, they were awesome. when one guy rapped about, "sticking his lyrical dick in your mouth, and busting a nut" i just about busted one myself. i may not be a true fan, but i have "mad" respect for the innovative, and for the creativity displayed by hip hop artists. right when j 5 left the stage, international noise conspiracy were taking their stage in a smaller tent area, next to the dj tent. they were the motherfucking nuts. i'd seen them once before, and they just seemed way more...frantic, alive, vital. they blew my mind. the tent was a see of smiling, jubuliant faces. it was a lovefest in there. they wear matching outfits, and they have the greatest energy. if an american band/artist moves from one side of the stage to the other, the audience is wetting themselves. these guys are snake hips, and side splits, mic tricks, and high kicks. they are not only a tight, talented band, but they are ENTERTAINING. how many bands can you REALLY say that about? they encored with blitzkrieg bop, and it was a killer. as we left the tent, we could hear cake singing "the distance". i fucking loathe cake. 'nuff said. the main stage was offering the last bit of chemical brothers, and we enjoyed that. i'll write about sunday sometime in the next coupla days. i am doing this for finn, hucksterfinn. i'd never refuse a cali homeboy. i'm not sure what you wanted more of, so i threw it all in. you have to be really careful when you ask me for a detailed report, coz then, i'll fucking go off. anyway, that was day one, for what it's worth. goodnight
